Early monsoon alert: Kerala likely to see rains from May 27

Amaravati: This year, the onset of the southwest monsoon is nine days ahead of the usual climatological date. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, this year, the southwest monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 27.

The usual date of the monsoon onset over Kerala—marking the official beginning of India’s primary four-month-long rainy season—is June 1. The monsoon rains are expected to progress northwards and cover the entire country by mid-July.

As per the latest data, the southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of the South Bay of Bengal, the south Andaman Sea, the Nicobar Islands and some parts of the North Andaman Sea on Tuesday.

Atmospheric conditions remain favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Arabian Sea, the Maldives and Comorin region; additional areas of the south Bay of Bengal; the entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands; the remaining Andaman Sea; and parts of the central Bay of Bengal over the next 3-4 days.

Weather in Andhra

According to IMD, Amaravati, a trough extends from a cyclonic circulation over eastern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar down to southern Odisha, passing through Chhattisgarh, at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Lower tropospheric southwesterly to northwesterly winds are prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and the Yanam region.

For the next five days, there will be thunderstorms accompanied by lightning likely at isolated places over NCAP and Yanam, SCAP and Rayalaseema.
