Winning an Oscar is the ultimate goal for many movie artists and technicians. Oscar or the Acadamy Award is considered as a "big prize" for the international movie industry. The competition for awards in each category is so huge that making it to the nominations itself calls for a celebration! The feeling of winning this award and giving a "Thank You" speech in front of celebrities, legendary artists and millions of viewers watching the show live is simply indescribable.

5 Indians Who Won the Oscar Awards:


India submits an official list of selected movies in different regional languages to the Oscars. While we never won the Best foreign film award, there are 5 artists who made it big in other categories like music, costume designing etc.

Here are the details of Indian Oscar award winners:

1. Bhanu Athaiya:


Bhanu Athaiya, fondly called the Oscar lady created history by being the First Indian to win an Oscar award. She started her career as a fashion illustrator and moved to designing where she tasted immense success. Athaiya designed costumes for over 100 films of which the 1982 movie "Gandhi" won her the "The Academy Award for Best Costume Design". Apart from winning the prestigious Oscar award, Athaiya also won two National awards for the movies "Lekin.." and "Lagaan".

2. Satyajit Ray:


Satyajit Ray is a multi-facted Indian filmmaker who is considered as one of the greatest directors in the world. Although he predominantly worked in Bengali films, Ray has a profound influence on local and international filmmakers. He authored several short stories which were later adapted into movies. Apart from winning several awards in the country, Satyajot Ray won the Honorary Oscar for Life time Achievement in the year 1992. Owing to his ill health, Ray delivered his winning speech from the hospital bed.

3. A.R. Rahman:


It is no exaggeration to call A.R.Rahman as the Musical Pride of India! He is a phenomenal music composer, singer and songwriter who has provided sensational songs and background scores to many movies like Roja, Lagaan, MinsaraKanavu etc. The Musical maestro is also the only Indian and the only Asian to have won two Oscars in the same year (2009) for the movie "Slumdog Millionaire". He was presented the Academy awards for "Best Original Score" and "Best Original Song" for "Jai Ho".

4. Resul Pookutty:


The 81st Academy awards is very special to Indians, as not one but two of our countrymen won the prestigious award. One is our very own A.R. Rahman and the other is ResulPookutty.Resul rose to international fame after winning the Academy Award for "Best Sound Mixing". He made his debut in 1997 with Rajat Kapoor's "Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One". He made it big with the movie "Black" directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali in 2005. He worked as a sound engineer for movies like "Zinda", "Saawariya", "Enthiran", "Traffic Signal" etc.

5. Gulzar:


Gulzar whose actual name is Sampooran Singh Kalra is a famous Indian lyricist and film director. He made a debut into the film industry as a lyricist in 1963 for "Bandhini" for which S.D. Burman was the music director. The song "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire won him the Academy award for Best Original song which he shared with A.R.Rahman. Gulzar was also awarded the Dadasahed Phalke Award, Grammy Award, National film Awards and many more such prestigious awards in India.
